Skype is for people who want to use the internet for their phone and run it through their computer. All you need is a microphone, speakers, and the absolut lowest standards for phone quality and you're set. I've used it, it's ass, but it's free so people love it.
Put your pointer here, then here.

Well, i use Skype not only bc it´s free but it has a way better quality then phone. I don´t know, maybe it depends on the microphone one uses, but i hear everything chrystal clear in Skype. But i use it only with people who have it also, not for my ordinary phone calls.

Yes Skype uses the same principal as Peer 2 Peer networking (VoIP) and was originally based on the Kazaa software. The sound quality is much better than your phone even when talking internationally over it. Its free to use with PC to PC but you pay to use it as a phone service if you want to call phone numbers. Its basically another IM program with file sharing, video conferencing and the usual Hoo-Har but used to call phone numbers.

Ebay purchased it in 2005 for an incredible amount from Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis ($2.6 billion in up-front cash and eBay stock)
It runs on Linux, Mac's, Windows and some mobile phones.
It only works for broadband users and Ive found when Ive been shaped to dial up speeds voices become slowed down and it sounds like the person is drunk running at 13rpm.
Try it out Charlie, its free

There are also a couple things to beware of with Skype:

1. Skype customer service and accounting have been spotty. You need pay-to-play SkypeOut to place calls to regular phone numbers (which is where some accounting complaints are). It is not generic VoIP, so it can't call SIP phones directly.

2. Skype communication is supposedly encrypted yet there have been rumors and the occasional public statement by European law enforcement agencies about being able to tap Skype calls even though it's peer-to-peer.

3. The server-less design means it needs something that acts like a server. The Skype software looks at clients Skype is running on and watches for one with enough bandwidth and processing power and dubs it a Supernode. Supernodes relay communications to Skype clients behind firewalls (the protocol is not NAT compatible). To avoid becoming a Supernode the client only has to be behind a firewall.

If you really like Skype there are also ways to use it without a computer by purchasing a stand-alone Skype phone such as this Belkin:

I think it has it´s flaws if it´s usedas a normal phone, but like i said i use it only for calls to other people who use it and that´s maybe every 2 weeks for 1 or 2 hours.

The lack of a "universal emergency telephone number" (911 in the US) means you can't really replace all your phones with a Skype service. People with mobile phones with e911 might have an issue with that idea. And the non-free of SkypeOut may turn some people off.

However, if you can get your friends and/or family who don't live nearby to set up Skype then it's a great way to have long voice and video conversations, etc. without running up a huge bill. The primary requirement is sufficient Internet bandwidth to handle a clean signal. Stuff like Bit Torrent has to be disabled during calls somehow because if they crank up mid-call they'll degrade the signal. Skype is also great for "Internet friends" because you can just leave it on while fooling around on the Internet and shoot each other links and what not. That's the way I use it, not as a replacement but as a supplemental service.

Using the computer mic and speakers can be a bit iffy, but with a handset or headset the audio quality is good as long as there is enough bandwidth.

I wasnt sure what it was,,I thought it had to do with Video,,Like a video and phone together.
Or i thought it was a type of instant messanger,,,,So i guess its a phone one your computer.

So when you get calls ,,does it work like a regular phone,,,Does it ring,,Or does it just pop up on your screen.
Heres a question,,,Is it like a phone number,,Can you call any number on it,,Or just other people with Skype.

I already said previously its basically an IM program. But it also has a virtual phone keypad to dial landline phones through VoIP. If you pay you can have a number given and Landline phones can call you if you have the skype app running or like dogman said and have Skype based phones. All the info really is on their website of www.skype.com mate

I can't believe the people in here who claim that Skype has better call quality than a land line. If I'm talking to someone on my cell phone while driving, once I get home I hang up and call them from a LL. I find the quality of Skype to be worse than that of a cell phone. I have a good microphone, I have good speakers, I'm on broadband, but my personal preference is for analog over digital when it comes to voice calls.

I believe you but it´s true. I don´t know, but the quality is really way better than on a normal phone, though i have some guys in my contact list who use a bad mic and the quality is worse when i speak to them. But with most of my contacts i have a amazing quality and everytime i asked someone to try it they said the same.

Skype has its limitations but for on-line folk and road warriors it has a lot of uses.

Three thumbs up!
